*Spoilers Ahead, Duh*
Wow okay so in all honesty, Alex and I are writing this about a month and a half after watching the movie. It’s a great movie, but by the time you finish, you’re already 3 years older. So bear with us as we try to recap the movie (with the help of Quinn, who actually remembers the plot).

Maximus (aka the Gladiator), a general of war, is leading an army into battle for Hagen the King. After an epic win, they congregate in the forest to greet the King. We then find out that the King wishes for Maximus to be his heir, and actually asks him to, instead of Commodus his son. Commodus gets freaking butt hurt and murders his dad, the King, and steals the throne. Then, Commodus has his short-boy-syndrome attack and he’s like “Maximus makes me feel inferior, BOO, go kill him.” They take Maximus out to the woods, and he’s like “give me a soldier’s death,” he then fights all those idiot soldiers and runs away to find his family. In the process of stealing the throne, Commodus sends a squad of assassins to violently murder his wife and child. Very devastating and traumatizing to have their hanging bodies there so heads up for that.
Then Maximus is taken by slave traders and they are like “sick, new body to use in the fight pits.” Then he is sent to fight and discovers that he is in Commodus’ kingdom and hatches a plan to eventually get back at him. (This is basically a three-hour revenge plot.) After Maximus becomes a hella good fighter and wins every match and becomes a crowd favorite. Eventually, Commodus finds out that the Gladiator is Maximus and decided to hatch a plot to murder him. Long story short, Commodus and Maximus fight, with Commodus being a cheater and stabbing Maximus first while he’s tied up, and eventually Maximus kills him. Sadly, the movie ends with Maximus dying, but in the end, that is okay because he is reunited with his family.
We thoroughly enjoyed this film, however (“can’t say it enough” - Alex) this movie could be shorter. Even if you don’t like “history” movies, this movie will hook you with its revenge plot. We highly recommend blocking out a large chunk of time to make sure you experience it all in one go. It will take you a long time, but it’s worth it.
Score: 15/20
