Clueless

*Spoilers Ahead, Duh*

Well, once again, Alex and I are sitting down far too late from when we originally watched this film. It is October, and we think that we watched this film in mid-September. Our bad, once again. However, very likely we watched it at the end of the month, and it’s only been mere weeks. Luckily, it’s just our sweet sweet loves who read this--and as Alex just put it “were you really on the edge of your seats, waiting?... I doubt it.” Anyway, a pretty good film.

Alright, let’s hop in. The movie is about Cher, a very popular and stylish little lady in high school. She, and her best friend Dionne, rule the school. Between the cute fits and giving unsolicited fashion advice, Cher embarks on a mission to help guide a new girl, Tai, into the life of popularity and relationships. Embarking on a mission to bag a hottie, not a mushroom-haircut skater bro, and show the world they’re hot and cool. Amidst all this, Josh, Cher’s ex-step brother is visiting from college and lives with Cher and her father, all while showing classic signs of flirting (oof). As Cher embarks on supporting Tai into popularity she realizes that life is not all it’s cracked up to be--after some douchebag of a bro, who after being told no to getting down (As if!) and dirty leaves her stranded in a parking lot where she mugged (mad bummer town)... However, of course, Josh comes to her rescue--cause duh he’s hella into her.

Now, Tai confesses her feelings for Josh, to Cher, and once hearing this, Cher realizes her own affection for sweet, sweet Josh and pushes Tai away from him. Resulting in the fallout, the classic name-calling, the hard-hitting line of “You’re a virgin who can’t drive.” And ya know--who can’t relate at one point in their lives? But, shit, that’s gotta hurt. Anyway, bounce forward to the end of the film. Cher falls in love with Josh and they bop around town together. Cher then helps Tai get with her O.G. man Travis (aka Mr. mushroom-skater-boy) and ends with Cher and Josh macking it up! All while, of course, Dionne is the quintessential Black friend in the film who gets no good and decent plot development instead just exists as a sidekick to Cher, so boo you fucking Clueless--y’all really do be clueless.

After watching this film, again, and re-reading the synopsis weeks later (R.I.P.). We have concluded that it is a fine film, but nothing more. If you need a little rom-com we still suggest 10 Things I Hate About You over this. Paul Rudd is always great-- “A beautiful, beautiful man” as Alex puts it. However, nothing really stands out for this film, when compared with the classic young adult rom-com of this era. And, the bullshit of Dionne’s character alone is annoying, and stop pretending as if you wrote in a good character when you gave her NO screen time even though she is clearly the best badass woman in the film, who takes no bullshit. Hence, not getting a 10/10 review. Much room for improvement.

Recommendation: We were somewhat drunk, so we are making the recommendation now; if you’ve seen all the others, you should watch a classic coroner stone, with the preface that it’s exactly like the others.

Cheers!
