*Spoilers Ahead, Duh*

10 Things I Hate About You is a film from 1999 and perfectly captures an unrealistic adventure of high school. The story consists of the two outcasts of high school, both seniors, getting together through a pretty great plot. This film also has a stacked cast with Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, young Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Larry Miller. Heath Ledger spends his time during the film trying to get Julia Stiles to go out with him for a job. It’s a pretty see-through plot from start to finish: boy and girl are outcasts, boy gets paid to take girl out, they actually fall in love, she finds out, big fallout, and then a great final get together scene. Honestly though, sometimes we all just want a little predictability in our films--or at least in this film it’s great. Bonus, it’s set in Seattle, where we live, so obviously we googled if they filmed there--they did (and Tacoma too).

There are many great characters and stories in this film, but we are going to only focus on the pair that matter. Surprise, it’s Heath Ledger (Patrick) and Julia Stiles (Kat). Alex’s favorite scene includes Ledger running across the bleachers of their high school’s stadium singing Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You to Kat. Although she hates grand gestures, she whole-heartedly supports this moment. Personally, my favorite scene comes after he sings and is stuck in detention. Kat takes getting him out into her own hands and ends up flashing a teacher to distract while Patrick escapes. I literally yelled “Who in the world would do that in high school!?” and then promptly started hooting and hollering for her badass spirit. The end of the film is great and has many touching moments between Kat and her dad, as well as her sister. Heath Ledger is also a “pretty boy” (thanks Michael) and Julia Stiles is stunning so that also helps when watching the hour and a half long film. We highly suggest that all ages watch this film. It will inspire the old to feel youthful and sassy and the young to search for a relationship that doesn’t make you compromise on your character.

Recommendation: An amazing rom-com that is great if you want to hear great music and enjoy something witty and delightful.
