*Spoilers Ahead, Duh*
A film made in 1959, North by Northwest, holds up 61 years later. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock and takes place in New York City, Chicago, and around Mt. Rushmore. The film follows Cary Grant who plays Roger Thornhill as he is mistaken for a secret agent. While on his adventures he runs into Eve Kendall, played by Eva Marie Saint, who he falls madly in love with, only to find out she is close to the man trying to kill him. Between the car scenes, plane crashes, and theft, this movie keeps you engaged and laughing. Hitchcock has always been known for superior films, and North by Northwest is no exemption. The actors are strong and work to have fully robust characters throughout the film. The plot, although having some clear paths forward, still offers some sneaky twists and turns.

This was not my first time watching this film, however, Alex watched with a pair of fresh eyes. We found the drunk driving scene to be particularly hysterical (we do NOT condone driving under the influence) due to the wonderful backdrops that are 1959 special effects. Alex took a liking to the final chase scene down the mountain, even though it gave her “mad anxiety.” Personally, I am a fool for the mushy gushy train dining car scene. I think Eve Kendall is shown to be a simple badass with a sharp tongue. Plus, who doesn’t love Cary Grant being a love-struck idiot for Eve? Full transparency, we watched this film over two weeks ago, and have just now gotten to writing… because you know, we are so busy….
Score: 15.5/20
